For a fishery, like the Fiji national fishing fleet, that targets the highly migratory fish species (tuna) within the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO), it is important that we partake with our relevant government officials during its Regular sessions ensuring that conservation and management measures adopted at such meetings are well discussed and understood since they are binding to members and implemented by the fishing fleets. The adopted measures ensures the sustainability of the targeted tuna species and the tuna-like species, and the protection of non-targeted fish species like sharks, sea turtles, seabirds and marine mammals to name a few. In the 2024 Regular session held in Suva, Fiji a first for all RFMOs was achieved, when a measure on crew labour standards on board fishing vessels was adopted and to come into force on 1 January 2028[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”147″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]
