Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Engagement

The Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) has played a pivotal role in shaping the sustainable development of the Pacific fisheries sector, and the Fiji Fishing Industry Association (FFIA) is proud to be an active partner in this journey. In 2024, FFIA participated in FFA-led capacity-building programs on traceability and labelling, supporting efforts to enhance transparency and market credibility. FFIA also contributed to important dialogues on social issues within the fishing industry and collaborated in the formulation of labour policies for fishing crew, helping to elevate industry standards. In addition, FFIA extended its cooperation in a regional study assessing non-tariff barriers affecting tuna exports among WCPFC member countries. Through continued collaboration, FFIA remains committed to advancing FFA’s regional objectives while supporting Fiji’s national interests.

Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Participation

FFIA regularly contributes to regional fisheries governance through its involvement in the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). As part of the official Fiji delegation, FFIA actively participates in the WCPFC Annual Meeting and other relevant sessions, working in close coordination with the Ministry of Fisheries. Where appropriate, FFIA lends its technical expertise and industry perspectives to support Fiji’s representation and promote responsible tuna management across the region.

Pacific Community (SPC)

FFIA members work closely with SPC in the areas of fishing data sharing, trials of fishing gadgets, and the gathering of biological samples from fishing trips for the regional work to better understand the science of the regional tuna fisheries. And FFIA members will continue to collaborate with SPC in this area for our and the regional longline fisheries. Currently, fish muscles are being collected from tuna landed by the Fiji longliners, and temperature sensors are being installed on 15 volunteer longline vessels.
