FFIA Stakeholder Engagement
- Ministry of Fisheries – Issues fishing licenses and authorisations, enforces the Offshore Fisheries Act and related regulations, and implements management measures from WCPFC. Oversees on-board and onshore monitoring, control, and surveillance to combat IUU fishing.
- Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations – Regulates and enforces labour standards, occupational health and safety requirements, and the Employment Relations Act.
- Ministry of Health – Conducts vessel and crew health inspections, issues Marine Board & Ship Sanitation Certificates, and provides health certification for exported fish and fishery products.
- Ministry of Agriculture – Sets standards for fumigation products used on fishing vessels.
- Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) – Regulates vessel safety, seafarer qualifications, and conducts pre-departure inspections.
- Ministry of Trade – Leads trade negotiations, facilitates market access, and promotes fisheries exports.
- Fiji Ports – Administers major ports under the Sea Ports Management Act 2005.
- Fiji Navy – Monitors and inspects fishing vessels at sea.
- Department of Immigration – Manages visa processing and immigration enforcement.
- Fiji Customs and Revenue Service – Administers customs and border protection, and collects taxes.
- Ministry of Environment – Ensures compliance with national environmental laws, conservation objectives, and sustainable resource management, including environmental impact assessments, biodiversity protection, and waste management.
- Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) – Represents FFIA and the fishing industry’s employer interests at the national level, advocating on labour policies, workplace standards, and industrial relations. Provides training, policy consultations, and networking opportunities to strengthen industry compliance and workforce capacity.
- National Union of Factory and Commercial Workers – Represents employees in the fishing and processing industry.
- Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) – Supports sustainable development of Pacific oceanic fisheries through monitoring, control, surveillance, and member development initiatives.
- Pacific Community (SPC) – Provides scientific and technical expertise to build member capacity in tuna fisheries and bycatch management.
- Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) – Regional fisheries management organisation for tuna resources in the WCPO, of which Fiji is a member.
- Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (Fiji National University) – Delivers maritime and fishing-related education and training.
- University of the South Pacific (USP) – Conducts laboratory testing for export fish and fishery products.
- Human Dignity Group – Advocates for fisher rights and conducts research on human rights in the fishing industry.
- World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – Global conservation organisation with a long-standing partnership with FFIA on sustainability initiatives.
- Conservation International – Works with FFIA on economic, environmental, and social aspects of the industry.
