The FFIA actively supports national and international efforts to conserve marine ecosystems while ensuring economic resilience. We participated in national consultations on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and proposed the designation of Fiji’s entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as a conservation site — without restricting fishing access — by supporting vertical zoning (e.g., restricting fishing below 500 meters) instead of closing traditional fishing grounds. Our approach balances biodiversity protection with the sustainable use of marine resources. FFIA also endorses strict species protection measures, including Fiji’s prohibition on demersal trawling and driftnet fishing, within our EEZ.
